The Beaumont Big Band performed a range of classics and favourites from their wide repertoire at their 10th anniversary concert on Saturday, to a sell-out audience. Several alumni took part in the celebrations which raised money for the planned new Beaumont Arts Centre. Thanks go to the BSA who ran the catering and bar at this very successful fundraising event.
Congratulations go to Dr Jones and her team of successful Lego “engineers” who have won the Research Project Award in the regional First Lego League competition.
The BSA has put on another splendid Christmas Fair this year, raising money for the school. With contributions from the Music Department, everyone was in the festive spirit, no doubt helped by mulled wine, mince pies and the winnings from the Chocolate Tombola stall! Thank You to all the parents, students and staff who contributed to the success of the day.
The Music Department’s Christmas Concert is one of the highlights of the end of Autumn Term. The stage is a full of performers as the Hall is with eager audience members and the various ensembles perform a wide repertoire of seasonal and other music. Students will perform seasonal music at the BSA Christmas fair (on Saturday) and also at the annual Carol Service at St Peter’s church on 18th December.
The GCSE Presentation Evening saw Year 12 students smartly dressed for the occasion. Former student, Anshula Bain presented the certificates and trophies to the “class of 2019” and spoke of her life since leaving Beaumont, including her current work with refugees in Hertfordshire. Always a favourite part of the evening, students and their parents were treated to a montage of pictures from their five years at Beaumont. This can be viewed here. Today has been “Drop Everything And Read!” day for students in Years 7 to 10 – Year 11 students are busy revising for their Mocks! This year’s whole-school read has been George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’ and, as well as discussing the themes of the novella, students have been treated to an audio-book version, read by Beaumont staff, divided into seven parts – one for each lesson of the day.
Year 11 students have taken part in a Moving On Curriculum Enrichment Day where they participated in a range of workshops and activities to prepare them for their post 16 choices. They included students reviewing their skills for further and higher education, learning about applications to the Sixth Form, Apprenticeships or College and investigating the range of Careers Guidance resources and support available in school and online.
They also visited a “Careers, Education & Training Fair”, put on in school, with stalls and displays hosted by over 30 local and national employers, Apprenticeship providers, universities and colleges.
The Great Beaumont Inter-House Bake-Off has been one of the highlights of the House competition for several years. Students (with some help from home!) bake cakes based on their House names and colours. House points were awarded for the winning entries, judged by Mr Atkinson and members of the Technology Department; and all entries were sold off to raise money for the school and for charities too. This year, the nominated charity is Breast Cancer Awareness.
On Thursday 24th October, Beaumont School and Sir John Lawes School delivered a Zero Poverty Youth Forum to students from our schools as well as St Albans Girls’ School and Sandringham; the event was hosted at Beaumont. In the morning all attendees were welcomed by John McLaverty, Education and Youth coordinator for Oxfam GB with a motivating presentation about the importance of students taking action to make change in their world. Students from Beaumont and SJL led workshops that covered topics such as: issues of global inequality, the link between poverty and climate change and how to solve issues of poverty in the local area.
In the afternoon John McLaverty was joined by Daisy Cooper (St Albans Lib. Dem. parliamentary spokesperson) and Peter Cashman from Christian Aid who took part in a Question Time style debate, hosted by Beaumont Year 13 Government and Politics student Finlay Craigmyle , accepting challenging and thought provoking questions from the students.
Sixth Form students have presented Steve Lindsay, Prince’s Trust Ambassador, with a £1500 donation from the profits of this year’s Rob’s Festival. The festival, now in its 10th year, is run by a team of Sixth Form students, working with the BSA. Find out more about this annual fund-raising event here.
