Music Tour to Paris

The Music Department took 63 students from Years 8-13 on a five day tour to Paris, during February Half Term. They performed three concerts; a sacred concert at L’églaise de la Madeleine in central Paris, a short set on the Videopolis stage at Disneyland Paris, and an extended concert at the Chapel of the Charles Foix Hospital, on the outskirts of Paris. As well as performing, the students enjoyed a boat trip on the Seine, at day at Disneyland, as well as sightseeing on the final day.

Evening entertainment included a quiz, with a variety of rounds provided by the staff, and an informal concert organised by the Sixth Form students. The students performed exceptionally well, and were a credit to the school throughout the trip.

‘Game Over’ – the first workshop of a newly commissioned play

With the help of National Lottery Funding, the Beaumont Drama Department has joined forces with playwright, Mark Wheeller and the Breck Foundation and commissioned Mark to write a play which will be performed later this year. It’s a true and thought-provoking story that we will be honoured to perform and it gives an important message to the Digital Generation to keep safe online.

Mark Wheeller joined students today to discuss his play with the students and staff who will be involved in the play’s premiere performance, later this year.

Holocaust Memorial Day

In advance of Holocaust Memorial Day at the end of January, Ms Dickson gave an emotional assembly to Years 8-12, recounting the story of her grandfather’s escape from Nazi Germany, and that of the British man responsible for saving him, Frank Foley. A memorial has recently been unveiled to Frank Foley, who was a British spy in 1930s Berlin, who used his position to create false papers to allow about 10,000 Jewish Germans to leave the country illegally.

One of the families he helped was that of Ms Dickson’s grandfather, his brother and his parents.

As it says on Frank Foley’s memorial: “He who saves one, saves the world”.

 

The Yr 7 Science Club celebrates “Chemist-mas”

Each year, the Year 7 Science Club gets to explore some amazing chemical reactions to make a range of colours for the Science Department’s “Chemist-tree”.

Author Visit

The majority of authors who visit Beaumont come to meet and address Years 7 and 8, so it is with great pleasure that welcomed writer Tom Pollock to the school on Thursday 6th December to talk exclusively to our Year 9 students. Tom has written four books for young adults and read from his most recently published novel, White Rabbit, Red Wolf.

The White Rabbit character of the title is Peter Blankman, a teenage Maths genius battling with paranoia and severe anxiety issues. The story ignites when Peter’s mother, a top genetic scientist, is stabbed and his beloved twin sister Bel disappears without a trace. The plot twists and turns breathlessly as Peter finds himself caught up in a web of intrigue, espionage and violence that will test his courage and sanity to the limit. Can Peter’s logical mind and obsession with Maths help him discover the truth?

White Rabbit, Red Wolf is a highly original, fast-paced and often brutal thriller that grabs the reader and throws them into the heart of the action. We were delighted to hear Tom Pollock discuss the book with our Year 9 students.

BSA Christmas Fair

In spite of grey skies and the threat of rain, parents, students and staff started off the Beaumont Christmas season with the BSA Christmas Fair. This event raises money to support the school through a range of stalls and activities. As well as putting the “fun” in fundraising, the students’ stalls also earn House points for their respective Houses. This event is one of the main ways in which the BSA raises money for the school each year and it shows the Beaumont community at its best

Great Beaumont Inter-House Bake-Off 2018

The Hall was filled with eager “taste-testers” at the 2018 Great Beaumont Inter-House Bake-Off.  With the new arrival of Butler House, there were even more culinary delights on offer in a rainbow of colours. The team of judges, led by Mr Atkinson, considered the decorative, design and (of course) taste qualities of the seven House stalls, with the academic year’s first House Points at stake.

 

Presentation to the Prince’s Trust

The Year 13 students who formed the 2018 Rob’s Festival Committee, alongside the Chair of the BSA, Wendy Cooper, have presented Steve Lindsay from the Prince’s Trust with a donation from the proceeds of this year’s festival. This is the ninth year that Beaumont has put on a festival of music and sport, dedicated to our former student Rob Williams. Read more about this event here.

Sporting start to the year

Beaumont PE has got off to an excellent start to the new academic year, with numerous victories across a range of sports, including, Year 11 girls’ netball,U13 boys’ football. Year 7 boys have already made their mark in both rugby and football.

Author Visits

Penny Joelson, author of our “whole school read”, I Have No Secrets, has visited the school to discuss her writing with students from Years 8 – 11 and to talk to individuals as part of a book-signing in the school Library. The Library team has also arranged a visit by Susin Nielsen, who gave a reading from her recent novel No Fixed Address to Year 8 and also talked to students in the Library afterwards.
