World Book Day 2018

As part of our celebrations for World Book Day 2018, we welcomed Dave Cousins back to Beaumont on Friday 2nd March. Dave’s books are described as ‘teen realism with action, humour and heart’. He talked to our Year 7 students about his books and the inspiration and process behind his writing. His workshop also focused on showing the students that “we all have a story to tell”. The session fulfilled its promise of being highly entertaining as Dave’s author events have been likened to ‘stand-up…with books’!

Hertfordshire Gala Concert

Beaumont’s Music Department took 75 singers to the Hertfordshire Gala at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 11th March. The Gala is a biannual event held at the Royal Albert Hall which involves secondary school and primary school choirs across Hertfordshire coming together to perform a large-scale work accompanied by the Hertfordshire Schools’ Symphony Orchestra, in which five of our students play regularly. This year the Music Service commissioned composer Will Todd to write If I had Wings, a story about Icarus and his father Daedalus, with words by Michael Rosen, who came to narrate the work as well. The afternoon concert was a great success and a fantastic experience for our students.

Whole School Read

This week staff from across the school have been out and about promoting the latest “Whole School Read”, The Giver, written by Lois Lowry. Bicycles feature prominently this dystopian novel and so the Librarians and teachers have been cycling around the school site to raise awareness of the book, which we are encouraging all students and staff to read as part of Beaumont’s Literacy Strategy.

U16 Football success

Beaumont’s amazing football season continues with both the girls’ and boys’ teams surpassing themselves. After the girls’ team’s valiant efforts to reach the final sixteen of the English Schools FA championship last week, our U16 boys’ team is travelling to Brighton this week in their quest to reach the quarter finals of their equivalent tournament.  Well done to both the outstanding teams and the PE Department!

St Peter’s Carol Service

St Peter’s church was crammed to the aisles for the annual Carol Service. Alongside the traditional carols and readings, the congregation was treated to performances by the various Music Department choirs and ensembles, rounded off with mince pies and mulled wine courtesy of the BSA.

Beaumont alumni visited the rehearsals (pictured below) to lend their support.

Christmas Jumper Day

Beaumont staff and Sixth Form have dug out their Christmas Jumpers to raise money for Save The Children. This event has grown and grown each year and is a key part of the many fundraising activities carried out by students, parents and staff throughout the school year.

Christmas Concert

The Hall was filled with both musicians and audience members for the annual Beaumont Christmas Concert. Parents, students, staff and friends of the school were treated to a feast of seasonal music, ranging from popular classics, such as Sleigh Ride and White Christmas, to more classical works by Grieg, Britten and Saint-Saens. Two pieces receiving the greatest applause were the choir’s rendition of Let the River Run and the percussion ensemble’s “BBC Sport” Medley. The Music Department will perform more of its wide-ranging repertoire at the annual Carol Service at St Peter’s Church on Monday 18th December.
