Beaumont School Library

Beaumont library is a vibrant facility that enhances and supports learning across the curriculum. It also offers a welcoming environment for students who are looking for a place to read, relax and retreat momentarily from the rigours of the school day.

Beaumont Library is not only a room filled with books, but a place that has helped me escape to other worlds all through the art of reading stories. The Library has been really important to me; I have met new people with similar interests and read a WIDE variety of books. I love the Library and the amount of effort the librarians put into encouraging students to find a book that suits them through lots of displays, events and book clubs.

Homework club

The Library remains open beyond the end of the school day for students who wish to complete homework. These sessions are overseen by a member of the teaching support staff.

Homework club runs from 15.30 – 16.30 on Mondays to Thursdays

Accessit – The Library at Your Fingertips

Our library uses Accessit, an engaging and interactive library management system that makes exploring resources easy. With Accessit, students can log in from home or on any mobile device through the Accessit web app.

Getting Started

Students can sign into Accessit using their Single Sign-On (SSO) details, the same credentials they use for school computers. The web app is also accessible via the school portal.

Features and Resources

This user-friendly app provides a wide range of library services, allowing students to:

  • Browse and explore the library catalogue
  • Reserve, renew, and review books
  • Create personalised reading wish lists

The web app is regularly updated with the latest information, including:

  • Library news, author interviews, and book recommendations
  • Reviews and podcasts

A helpful “How to Use the Library Web App” video is also available on the dashboard.

We’ve created several themed dashboards on Accessit to provide focused resources and content, including:

  • 6th Form Science
  • Black History Month
  • Diversity and Inclusion
  • Non-Fiction November

Each dashboard offers interactive resources tailored to these specific areas of interest.

Quick Lists

For easy browsing, students can explore curated book lists in the “Quick Lists” section of the main dashboard. These lists are organised by popular themes and genres, including:

  • Crime and Mystery
  • Empathy Reads
  • Sports Crazy

New lists are added regularly, often based on student feedback and requests.

Borrowing Rules

Students can borrow up to three books at a time, with a loan period of three weeks. Renewals can be managed directly through the Accessit web app. While we don’t charge overdue fines, we follow the school’s behaviour policy to retrieve overdue books.

Explore, engage, and enjoy the library—anytime, anywhere – with Accessit!

The Beaumont Library Google Classroom

Our dedicated Google Classroom, Library Matters, serves as a central hub for library updates. Here, we communicate with students about loans, reservations, and overdue books. Students can join Library Matters using the classroom code: rocskp6.

Explore the Library’s Resources

Fiction Collection

Our fiction collection caters to a wide range of interests and reading levels. Within this collection, students can explore sections devoted to specific genres, including:

  • Humour
  • Fantasy
  • Science Fiction
  • Historical Fiction
  • Classics
  • Graphic Novels

To support a wide range of reading needs, we also carry dyslexia-friendly titles from Barrington Stoke in our Short But Sweet section. This features over 300 compelling shorter reads.

Nonfiction and Information Resources

Alongside information books, our nonfiction offering includes

Issues Magazines

We subscribe to Issues and Complete Issues, a resource series exploring contemporary topics such as bullying, animal rights, crime and justice, and global poverty. Students are encouraged to use these valuable resources to build research skills, especially for projects like the school’s annual Public Speaking Challenge. Digital versions of Issues and Complete Issues are available on the Accessit dashboard.

Digital Journals

For Year 12 and 13 students, we provide access to A-Level Review magazines, including Business, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geography, Modern History, Physics, RS and Sociology.

These resources are available in digital format. We also subscribe to the English and Media Centre Magazine for A-Level students. These publications can be accessed via the Sixth Form and EPQ dashboards on Accessit.

Our students can also enjoy free access to the Financial Times via FT for Schools, accessible through the 6th form dashboard on Accessit.

PC Access

The Library is equipped with twelve PCs, available for use during Library lessons, as well as during morning and lunchtime breaks.

Building a Library That Reflects Our Students

At Beaumont Library, we strive to curate a collection that reflects our students’ diverse interests and needs. We actively encourage students to recommend titles and make suggestions on what books to buy for the Library. To keep our resources relevant, we also consult subject leaders, staff members, and collaborate with other school libraries and national library groups.

Supporting Learning at Beaumont Library

Accelerated Reader & Reading Sessions

Year 7 and 8 students participate in weekly reading sessions supported by the Renaissance Place Accelerated Reader (AR) system. AR is a program that assesses each student’s reading level, guiding them to choose books matched to their ability. Books are categorised by difficulty, allowing teachers and library staff to personalise reading selections and support students’ progress. The AR system includes a vast catalogue of book quizzes, which help monitor students’ reading comprehension and track their progress. Librarians play a key role in AR lessons, assisting students with book selection, managing reading quizzes, and running an awards scheme that recognises student achievements.

Word of the Week Challenge

To expand students’ vocabulary, the Library hosts a Word of the Week (WOW) challenge in AR sessions. Year 7 and 8 students are encouraged to find new words in their reading and submit one WOW suggestion per term. Each week, one WOW from Year 7 and one from Year 8 are selected and featured on our Instagram page with the hashtag #wowbeaumont. At the end of term, we display all student submissions on our colourful WOW board in the Library.

Library Lessons

With ample space and computers, the Library is a versatile setting for various lessons throughout the school day. As well as Year 7 and 8 Accelerated Reader lessons  the Library also hosts academic and student mentoring, and Year 9 additional English Language lessons.

Books and Beyond: A Vibrant Community Space

The Beaumont Library is a dynamic space ideal for reading clubs, author visits, and other literary events.

Beaumont Book Clubs

Our various lunchtime book clubs invite students across the year groups to read, share ideas, and enjoy book-related activities. The clubs create a fun, relaxed atmosphere to help students build a lifelong love of reading, and the sessions are often lively! Students are also encouraged to run their own book club sessions. This has resulted in students establishing their own annual Beaumont Book Awards (BBA) and the 6th form book club. Book club members have the chance to interview visiting authors, adding a unique dimension to their reading experience.

Book Awards & Beaumont Reads

The Library participates in a number of national book awards, such as the Children’s Book Award and the CILIP Carnegie Medal for Writing. These awards provide students with the very best in contemporary books for young people. In partnership with the Literacy Department, we also lead the whole school read (WSR) programme, #BeaumontReads. This annual initiative invites students, families, and staff to read and share a selected fiction title. Past whole school reads have included Apple and Rain by Sarah Crossan and Safiyyah’s War by Hiba Noor Khan. A full list of WSR titles can be found in the Quick Lists section on Accessit. Students’ reviews and #BeaumontReads projects are displayed throughout the Library and school.

Author Visits

Whenever possible, we invite authors to visit Beaumont. These visits provide students with a chance to hear authors discuss their work and creative inspiration. Past guests have included Sarah Crossan, Tia Fisher, Penny Joelson, Simon James Green  and Karl Nova. Orwell). These visits are always very popular with students, sparking and reinforcing an interest in reading.

Creating a Fun & Welcoming Space

Our regular book-based competitions and reward programs are designed to engage students and encourage participation in Library activities. The Library is also a lively spot for socialising and playing chess and Uno. In addition, we welcome the student-led ‘Dungeons and Dragons Club’ to the Library every Thursday lunchtime.

Student Librarians & Parent Helpers

We encourage students to take an active role in the Library by becoming student librarians. These students are trained to use the Accessit system for issuing and returning books, and to help with shelving and other tasks that keep the Library running smoothly. We’re also grateful to have parent volunteers who generously donate their time to support our Library.

Stay Connected: Beaumont Library Newsletter and Instagram
